Local Government Overview

Government

The Town of Selbyville is a municipal corporation of the state of Delaware. It is governed by five (5) councilmembers who shall serve two (2) years. All councilmembers serve at large. The election of three (3) councilmembers is held in odd number years and the election of two (2) councilmembers is held in even number years. One serves as the Mayor of Selbyville. They have the legislative power to provide police protection and to develop and adopt ordinances relating to parking, zoning, traffic, signs, and construction and property maintenance code.

Town elections are held on the first Saturday of March.

Town meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at 6:00PM in the Town Hall.


Planning & Zoning Commission

Their primary duties are to adopt an official map pursuant to the statute and to act on matters placed before them by character or the Town Council. The commission consists of the one (1) councilmember and four (4) residents of the Town.

Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment consists of our Mayor, one (1) councilmember and the Town’s solicitor. Their responsibilities include:

  1. Hearing and deciding appeals on errors of zoning or inspection.
  2. Hearing and deciding special exceptions
  3. Authorizing variances when appropriate

Industrial Park Committee

This committee consists of two (2) councilmembers and five (5) residents of the Town.
